Surgery creates inflammation. Fluid moves into the tissues as part of the normal healing response, lymphatic flow can temporarily become less efficient and swelling, tightness and areas of tissue firmness can develop.
Post-operative lymphatic treatment is designed to work with that process rather than fight it with heavy pressure.
Gentle Manual Lymphatic Drainage encourages the movement of excess interstitial fluid through the lymphatic system, while treatment can also be adapted to areas where tissue is becoming firm, congested or fibrotic.
Support drainage of excess tissue fluid and oedema.
Encourage the body’s natural removal of excess fluid, proteins, cellular debris and waste products.
Early, appropriate management of swelling and tissue congestion can help minimise the development of hard, irregular fibrotic areas.
Treatment can help ease tightness, discomfort and the feeling of congested or hardened tissue.
“Detox” gets used loosely, but there is a real physiological process behind it.
Your lymphatic system collects excess fluid from the tissues and carries proteins, cell debris, inflammatory material and other waste products back into circulation for processing and elimination.
After surgery, supporting that lymphatic movement can be particularly useful because the tissues are dealing with increased fluid, inflammation and cellular debris from the healing process.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage uses light, specialised movements rather than deep pressure to encourage this natural drainage pathway.
Fibrosis is one of the concerns people commonly have after liposuction and body-contouring surgery. It can feel like firm, hard or uneven areas beneath the skin and can affect how smoothly the tissues settle during recovery.
Controlling excessive swelling and maintaining appropriate tissue movement are important parts of post-operative care.
Lymphatic drainage and appropriate adjunctive treatment can be used to help reduce fluid congestion, soften developing areas of firmness and minimise fibrosis as the tissues recover.
If fibrosis has already started to develop, treatment is adapted to the stage and condition of the tissue rather than simply applying harder pressure.
Newly operated tissue does not need somebody digging into it. Early post-operative treatment is intentionally gentle and is completely different from Charlton’s deep tissue work.
Charlton can also incorporate Deep Oscillation® where appropriate.
Unlike conventional massage, Deep Oscillation does not rely on heavy mechanical pressure. An electrostatic field creates gentle oscillations through the tissue while Charlton works through specialised conductive gloves.
This makes it particularly useful when tissues are tender and deep pressure would be inappropriate.
SWELLING & OEDEMA
Supports the movement and reabsorption of excess tissue fluid.
FIBROSIS & TISSUE HARDNESS
Used to support softer, more mobile tissue and fibrosis management.
PAIN & EARLY RECOVERY
Its gentle application allows treatment without the heavy force associated with conventional massage.
PhysioPod describes application through gloved hands and specifically markets Deep Oscillation for oedema, fibrosis reduction, detoxification and tissue quality. Independent PubMed research has also reported postoperative pain reduction and benefits when Deep Oscillation was added to MLD in secondary breast lymphoedema.
Charlton works with people recovering from a range of procedures where swelling, lymphatic congestion and tissue firmness are part of the recovery picture
Lymphatic treatment after liposuction can help manage fluid accumulation, swelling and developing tissue firmness while supporting a smoother recovery of the treated areas.
Gentle lymphatic techniques may be appropriate during recovery to help manage swelling and lymphatic congestion around the abdomen and surrounding areas.
Depending on the procedure and medical clearance, gentle lymphatic support may be used to address post-operative swelling and tissue congestion.
Procedures involving significant tissue disruption can create swelling and areas of firmness that may benefit from appropriately timed lymphatic and tissue treatment.

Charlton will first ask what procedure you had, when it was performed, which areas were treated, what your surgeon has advised and how your recovery has progressed so far.
He will then assess swelling, areas of fluid congestion, tenderness, tissue firmness and any developing fibrosis before deciding what is appropriate that day.
1. ASSESS THE TISSUE
Swelling, firmness, sensitivity and stage of healing are checked first.
2. CHOOSE THE RIGHT TECHNIQUE
Charlton will select your treatment based on your stage of healing which may include Vodder MLD, gentle hands-on work, Deep Oscillation or a combination.
3. ADAPT AS YOU RECOVER
What your tissues need in week one may be very different from what they need several weeks later.
There is no single start date that is correct for every operation.
Some post-operative lymphatic techniques can be introduced very early, while other procedures require more healing time first. Your surgeon’s instructions, wound condition, drains, infection risk and overall recovery all matter.
Charlton will work within your surgeon’s guidance and may ask for medical clearance before treating you.
Post-operative massage is not the same as booking an ordinary massage and asking the therapist to “go gently”.
Charlton has more than 16 years of hands-on experience and specialist training in the Vodder Method of Manual Lymphatic Drainage. Treatment is based on the condition of the tissues in front of him rather than a standard massage routine.

Appropriate post-operative lymphatic treatment can help reduce swelling and fluid congestion and may help minimise the development of fibrosis and contour irregularities after liposuction. If fibrosis is already developing, treatment can also be adapted to areas of tissue firmness.
In this context, detox refers to supporting the lymphatic system’s normal clearance of excess tissue fluid, proteins, cellular debris and other waste material. It does not mean forcing toxins out of the body with heavy massage.
No it is surprisingly relaxing and soothing as it stimulates your parasympathetic nervous system. It will not feel like deep tissue massage. Early treatment is deliberately gentle. The aim is to work with healing tissue, not aggressively press into it.
Deep Oscillation uses an electrostatic field to create gentle oscillations within the tissues. Charlton applies it through conductive gloves, allowing treatment without the heavy pressure used in conventional massage.
That depends on your procedure, surgeon’s instructions and how your wounds are healing, but depending on what you've had, it can be as soon as 3 days post op. Contact Charlton with your surgery date and procedure if you are unsure, 072 865 1682.
In some cases, yes. Charlton may ask for medical clearance, particularly when treatment is very early after surgery or where there are healing concerns. But it is not generally needed for standard cases. If in doubt, check with your surgeon first though.
There is no standard number. Swelling, tissue response, procedure type and the stage of recovery differ between people. Charlton will reassess rather than automatically selling a fixed package. However, the way to think about this is that something is always better than nothing.
Wear something loose and easy to remove from the area being treated. We're used to working around drains, and leakage and dressings.
Towels are used throughout the appointment to keep you appropriately covered.
